In the art market hierarchy, drawing occupies a lowly tier. These are often deemed as informal or as preparatory to a more final work such as a painting or a sculpture. Artists, however, give drawings a high regard as they reveal musings and spontaneous encounters to conceptual and compositional problems. For Mauro Malang Santos, drawing was a daily task that should not be omitted. It provides the backbone to his art process, allowing the artist to explore expressive possibilities in lines and shadows. Starting off from Malang’s collection of drawings, this session will reveal how this art form has served as a valuable means towards figuration as well as abstraction.
