About THE METRO GALLERY
Metro Gallery is one of the more enduring art spaces in Metro Manila, having founded by Irene Sarmiento Cometa in 1991. Located in San Juan City, it initially traded the works of National Artists and other masters and oversaw the publication of art books. Soon, it began holding exhibitions featuring both emerging and established artists, some of whom have carved their names in the art scene. Metro Gallery is particularly known for Salut, a series of group shows that pay homage to the Old Masters of the Western canon.
Aside from its home exhibition space in San Juan, Metro Gallery has also held solo and group shows at ArtistSpace, Alliance de Française, and Art in the Park, among other art venues. It has also collaborated with other galleries to showcase the works of its regular artists that include Mark Copino, Adrian Evangelista, Pancho Francisco, Dino Gabito, Josue Mangrobang, Omar Whooop Ramos, and Crystal Tranquilino. In 2020, Metro Gallery joined Art Fair Philippines, which would eventually become an annual engagement.
True to the vision of its founder, Metro Gallery has shifted its focus to highlighting the works of young artists in well-thought-out curated exhibitions that promote a relaxed atmosphere and congenial spirit. It has also developed its digital platforms to expand its reach to international audience. Now on its 31st year, Metro Gallery bolsters its place in Philippine contemporary art by strengthening its exhibition line-up as well as by reaching out to partners for meaningful and relevant collaborations.
